Knowing When to Harvest

Cartier April 3, 2023

Cannabis plants is crucial for obtaining the desired potency and flavor. Harvesting at the right time can also ensure that the plants have reached their full potential and have the highest possible yield. Here are some indicators to look for when determining when to harvest cannabis plants:

Trichome color: The trichomes are small resin glands on the surface of the cannabis buds that contain the plant’s cannabinoids, including THC and CBD. When the trichomes are fully mature, they will turn from clear to cloudy or amber in color. For maximum potency, it’s recommended to harvest the plants when the trichomes are cloudy, with some amber-colored trichomes.

Pistil color: Pistils are small hair-like structures on the buds that can also indicate when the plant is ready for harvest. During the flowering stage, the pistils will start off white and gradually turn brown or orange. When approximately 70-80% of the pistils have turned brown, the plants are ready for harvest.

Buds size and density: The size and density of the buds can also indicate when the plants are ready for harvest. When the buds have reached their maximum size and density, it’s a sign that the plants have reached maturity and are ready for harvest.

Smell and taste: The smell and taste of the buds can also indicate when the plants are ready for harvest. When the buds have a strong and pleasant aroma, it’s a sign that they have reached their full potential and are ready for harvest.

It’s important to monitor these indicators and harvest the plants at the right time to ensure that the buds have the desired potency and flavor. Harvesting too early can result in lower potency and a harsher flavor, while harvesting too late can result in lower yield and degraded potency.

In addition to monitoring these indicators, it’s also important to flush the plants with water for at least a week before harvest. This helps remove any excess nutrients from the plants, resulting in a smoother flavor and cleaner burn.

Overall, knowing when to harvest cannabis plants is crucial for obtaining the desired potency, flavor, and yield. By monitoring trichome color, pistil color, bud size and density, and smell and taste, you can ensure that your cannabis plants are harvested at the right time for maximum quality and potency.
